What is Auto Insurance?

Car insurance helps to protect you against financial loss in the event of an accident, theft or damage to your car. More Information About Car Insurance in Connecticut

Auto Insurance Requirements in Connecticut

Under Connecticut state law, motor vehicle insurance is required to retain a private passenger vehicle’s registration, and insurance must be continuously maintained. Mandatory coverage includes liability coverage as well as uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage.

What Counts as a Private Passenger Vehicle in Connecticut?

Under Connecticut state law, a “private passenger motor vehicle” for insurance purposes includes vehicles which carry not more than ten passengers, such as the following:

  • Private passenger-type automobiles (sedan, etc.)
  • Station wagons
  • Camper-type motor vehicles
  • Trucks with a load capacity of 1,500 pounds or less
  • Some vehicles with commercial registration

Minimum Amount of Liability Coverage Required in Connecticut

Car insurance policies in Connecticut must include liability coverage of at least the following:

  • $25,000 for injury to or death of a person
  • $50,000 for injury to or death of more than one person in any accident
  • $25,000 for property damage

While these levels of coverage will keep you within the law, higher levels of liability coverage may be advisable in order to protect you in the case of an accident. Talk to an agent at Petruzelo to get great advice on what coverage might be best for you.

Mandatory Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Coverage in Connecticut

If you get into an accident with someone who does not have insurance, or doesn’t have enough to cover their levels of liability, uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage may cover bodily injury to you, family members who live with you, and passengers in your vehicle. It can also apply to hit-and-run drivers. The minimum amount required by law is $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident.

Optional Auto Insurance Coverage in Connecticut

While these are mandatory for all motorists in Connecticut, you may choose to buy policies with additional coverage at your discretion. These policies can include the following:

  • Collision coverage, which covers damage to your vehicle in the case of impact with another vehicle or object (usually with a deductible).
  • Comprehensive coverage, which covers damage to your vehicle from theft, vandalism, impacts with animals, natural disasters, and other hazards (usually with a deductible).
  • Glass coverage, which covers the costs of repairs to safety glass such as windshields.
  • Umbrella insurance, which can supplement the amount of liability for which you are covered.

The required minimum coverage may not be enough to pay for all the damages that result from an accident. The legally responsible driver will have to pay the additional expenses out of pocket.
