Choosing Car Insurance

If you live in Connecticut chances are you are going to need a car. And when you do keep in mind that car insurance isn't just a good idea, it's also the law. Currently Connecticut law requires a minimum of $20,000 per person and $40,000 per accident for bodily injury liability and $10,000 for accident for property damage liability. Remember, these are the minimum requirements. If you are involved in an accident that costs more that your minimum coverage the rest could come out of your pocket and that is a bill no one wants to see. At Petruzelo Insurance we want every driver in Connecticut to be as informed as possible when choosing car insurance so we've provided a few tips to help get you started.

The Big 3

In this case, the Big 3 isn't car manufacturers but rather the three types of basic coverage: liability, collision and comprehensive. With liability, if an accident is your fault, the insurance company will usually cover the damage you caused, including bodily injury and property damage. With collision the insurance company will cover the costs for repairs to your car should happen to strike a tree. Comprehensive covers damage from vandalism, theft, floods, fires and other events. It's important to know the basic types of coverage and what your insurance provider offers for each before you make a decision on the amount of insurance you choose.

How Much Insurance is Enough?

The big question every driver has to ask is how much insurance coverage is enough. Again, there is a state minimum but it is always a good idea to get more since the basic coverage won't always be enough to pay for damages and repairs. When figuring out the amount you are comfortable paying consider how often you drive your car, the hazards you face on daily basis (traffic, bad weather and parking) and the condition of your vehicle. All of these factors will help determine the amount that is right for you.

Discounts

When shopping for affordable car insurance never be afraid to ask questions and always find out what discounts you qualify for. Depending on the insurance agent you work with and their company you may be eligible for a number of discounts including low-risk occupations, renewal discounts, safe driving records and multiple vehicles. You may also qualify for a discount if you are a member of AAA or AARP. It never hurts to ask and you may be able to cut down on your car insurance costs.
