In 1923 insurance executive Hawthorne K. Dent pioneered a new type of insurance business that combined the financial stability of an investor-owned stock company with the preferred-risk underwriting and lower prices of a mutual or policy-owned company. In 1997 Safeco doubled in size by acquiring American States Financial Company and became a leading writer of insurance for small to mid-sized businesses. In September 2008 it was purchased by Liberty Mutual Company. Today, Safeco offers insurance solutions for individuals and businesses in Connecticut including car, home, motorcycle, boat, and business insurance.
